My Mexican Bachelorette
Well, it is getting closer to wedding time, which means I need a well deserved break from planning, appointments and down payments! What better escape than a trip down south with 13 of your best friends?
To get that many people to book an all inclusive trip for a bachelorette is pretty awesome. We wanted to find somewhere that everyone could afford and an option where people could stay for longer or shorter, depending on their work schedules.
We decided on Cancun, Mexico- a reasonable 4 hour flight from Toronto.
We booked the Oasis Palm Cancun, with prices around $1000 for 4 nights, which didn't seem to expensive, considering if we went somewhere like Miami or Las Vegas we likely would spend more when you factor in food, drinks and shopping.
Once we arrived at the Cancun airport, I was greeted by a man with a sign that said "Laura's Flock of Flamingos" - Clearly the weekend was going to have a Flamingo theme, which is adorable! All 14 of us piled into the limo- music blasting, champagne flowing- it was the perfect way to ride into town in style.
As you can see, there is a guy in the above photo. "isn't a bachelorette supposed to be only girls?" you ask. Well, sometimes yes, however we have been friends since grade 7, he knows most of my girlfriends and is willing to participate in all the questionable activities we are about to engage in. SO, we let him in. Lucky guy, eh?
Now that we have checked in, had lunch and changed into our bathing suits, it is time for drinks, baby!! The first day was slightly overcast, but we didn't get settled into the hotel until about 4, so i guess we can deal with that, under the condition that the remainder of the days where sunny- and they were!
The first night we ate at the buffet, followed by drinks outside by the pool and round one of bachelorette games. The hotel has this cheesy "disco" which looked more like a church to me, but that didn't stop us from tearing up the D-floor. When you come with 14 people, it doesnt matter how many others are there- we like to start our own dance parties anyways!
The next day was beach day. Or, as I like to call it "How can we draw attention to ourselves on a public beach?" Well- for starters, bring a beer chugging device. Step two, pack as many floaties as your luggage can hold. Step 3- Blow up dolls and male genatalia will definitely draw attention, so lets pack some of that as well.
Everyone wore pink sunglasses that read "Let's Flamingle" and white tanks that read "Let's Flamingle- Laura's Bachelorette." Just so everyone knew we were all part of the same group- in case it wasn't obvious enough.
We played a relay game that involved chugging beer out of flamingos, a Penis ring toss and strapping ourselves into a large pair of granny panties with our partner and racing the other team.
We definitely got stares from sun bathers on the beach. One lady even came up to us and asked if we were filming for the Bachelor, since there was one guy with us- I mean, Nick Viall is definitely welcome at my Bach any day of the week, but unfortunately he was unavailable that weekend.
The remainder of the day included volleyball, a lot of floating and a lot of long island ice teas. Around 7pm we had to clean up the mess we created and try to sober ourselves up enough to go for dinner at one of the restaurants. We all made it there, which is win.
That night we planned to go into town. Downtown Cancun reminded me of a mini Vegas. We paid $40 each and took a bus from the resort to Mandala night club and were able to drink as much as we wanted. We danced the night away, then took he dollar bus back to the hotel.
So, the next day was a little rough. Note to self- if you plan to potentially be hung over, a boat ride may not be the most ideal idea. We booked a Catamaran ride through the hotel that took us to Isla Mujeres, snorkelling and to an island for lunch. There was a group of rowdy girls on a bachelorette from New Zealand- they put our energy level to shame however i doubt they were drinking tequila straight from the bottle at 2am the night before!
The island was adorable, and had a lot of cute places to eat and shop. I bought a hammock, which has no place to go, since I live in a condo- but purchasing items that make no sense is kind of my thing on vacation.
The sea was rough that day my friends, but we managed to all stay alive. Only a few sea sick casualties, but we all recovered for the evening, where we hit the same restaurant as the night before and enjoyed some bottomless margaritas.
This evening involved more dancing at the disco/church, and an earlier night then the previous-in order to rest up for the next days excursions.
We lost 3 of our friends on the Monday, who needed to head back to cold Canada, but the rest of us has one more day of warmth. 8 of us decided to get some culture in, and headed to the Chichen-Itza- one of the wonders of the world.
We purchased the tour through the hotel and was around $80 American and the trip was approx. 10 hours long. They took us to a town where we could purchase souvineers and eat breakfast, a few hours at the Chichen-Itza with a guided tour, followed by a swim at the Cenotes.
I love a good souvenir. The day went by pretty quickly, and since we weren't hungover- it was a little more enjoyable. Just a tip, bring extra sun screen since there isn't a lot of shade at this world wonder, and no one likes burning to a crisp.
We arrived back at the hotel around 7:30pm, reunited with the girls who didn't join on the tour and enjoyed our last night of never ending margaritas. We spent most of the evening in the Cantina, drinking whatever "fun shot" was made for us.
This brings us to our final day. Nooooooo. It is always sad leaving after such a fun trip. We spent the last few hours enjoying the sun and sand. P.S the below bathing suit was definitely not made for water. I bought it online, and when it came it appeared to be a bandage dress material. One dip into the water, it stretched to the point where I needed to literally hold it on myself to avoid my friends getting a peep show.
After going on such an amazing trip with my friends, it really makes you realize how awesome it is to have such great people in your life! The weekend wouldn't have been the same without any of the people who came to share it with me, and i am waiting until the next bachelorette, when we can venture somewhere again! Ibiza, anyone?
